空海の偉業については、唐から我が国へ密教を伝えたとか、真言宗を開いたとか、四国八十八ヶ所を解説したとか、平仮名を作ったとか、「いろは歌」を作ったとか、満濃池の改修工事をしたとか伝えられているが、私がこれから本書で述べる偉業は、まだ世に知られていないだけでなく、これこそ空海が最も力を入れて成し遂げた最大の偉業であり、空海が大学を中途退学して僧に身を置いたのは、実にこの大仕事を成し遂げる為であった。
