How do I distribute my content through Kobo?
If you are interested in selling your content through Kobo using our existing process, please complete the following 5 steps:
- To begin, please download and review our Vendor Guide in detail. It contains all the information necessary for understanding our upload process and technical requirements.
- After you've read our guide and understand our technical requirements, please complete and return a copy of our Vendor Questionnaire to content@kobo.com. We'll take a look at your answers and assess the best method for getting your content onto Kobo. If you have any questions or concerns, please include them with your questionnaire and we'll respond as soon as possible.
- Once we have completed our assessment we will get in touch with you to discuss commercial terms and other important aspects of our upload requirements.
- After you've signed and returned your Kobo contract, we can begin to create the details of your FTP account. If you've decided to submit your metadata via Excel, we'll also provide you with our Excel Metadata Template at this time.
- Next, we'll return a countersigned agreement for your records. At this point, your account will be configured and transitioned to one of our content managers. They will assist you with uploading your ePub files and managing your content at Kobo.
If you would like to be notified when our self-pub portal is up and running, please provide us with your email address above.
-
What is the cost to distribute my eBooks through Kobo?
Nothing! Kobo does not charge a fee for distributing your eBooks. However if your content requires conversion to ePub, we offer a competitively priced conversion service for as little as $29 (or $22.50 for OEB and XML files) per title.
-
How do I get paid?
Kobo has a number of contract options available for Vendors. By assessing your completed Vendor Questionnaire, we can ensure that the contract you sign meets the needs of your specific publishing program.
You can receive royalty payments from Kobo in the following ways:
- Pay Pal - the minimum threshold for this option is $25 USD
- Cheque - the minimum threshold for this option is $100 USD
- Biannually - if your content has not generated the minimum thresholds listed above, we will provide you with payment every 6 months

What is an ePub?
Kobo proudly supports the ePub file format (with an .epub file extension), the industry standard electronic book format. ePubs are reflowable, meaning they can be distributed across a wide array of channels and devices without losing their structure. They provide readers with the opportunity to open a Kobo eBook on their smartphones, tablets, laptops, as well as our Kobo eReaders!
-
What is metadata?
Metadata is defined as data about data. For an eBook, metadata is the collection of information about your eBook (like its title, eISBN, author, publisher, BISAC codes, language, territorial rights, etc.).
Although it is not as exciting or as interesting as anything readers will find in your eBooks, metadata is critical for getting every eBook up for sale right side up, with all the information readers will need to find it in our store. Without metadata, your ePub files cannot upload to our FTP successfully and your eBooks will not appear in our bookstore.
A successful upload of your content to Kobo requires metadata to be submitted in one of the following formats:
- In the ONIX feed format
- In an Excel file
For more detailed information about metadata, please read the Content Matters section of our Vendor Guide.
-
How do I protect my content?
Kobo takes a number of steps to prevent your content from being copied, saved, distributed and reproduced. We offer our vendors the option to enable Digital Rights Management (DRM) on all of their titles. Please see the Security Matters section of our Vendor Guide for more information.
-
Who owns the rights to my books?
Kobo is not seeking an exclusive agreement to distribute your titles; however, in order to engage in an agreement with Kobo, we require that you own the digital rights to the content you wish to provide to us. If you only own the digital rights to your content in certain territories, please make sure you indicate so in your Vendor Questionnaire and include this information in the metadata files you submit to us.
-
What is an eISBN and how do I get one?
Kobo requires that all vendors have legitimate ISBN numbers for their eBooks (Kobo uses the term eISBN for eBook ISBN numbers). Similar to how hardcover texts have a separate ISBN from their paperback counterparts, the eBook version of your content requires a unique identifier as well. eISBNs are a requirement of a number of our international retail partners and the inclusion of an eISBN enables your book to be available from all of our eBook retail partners, so the inclusion of an eISBN will allow us to distribute your eBook through all possible channels.
Please refer to our Vendor Guide for a list of agencies that offer ISBNs in territories around the world.
-
Where else can Kobo distribute my eBooks?
Kobo is continuing to expand our global presence by partnering with a number of local and international eBook retailers. Some of our current partnerships include: Chapters/Indigo (Canada), Angus and Robertson (Australia), Whitcoulls (New Zealand), FNAC (France), WH Smith (United Kingdom), as well as our own international eBook store at http://www.kobobooks.com/.
