Зигмунд Фройд (1856–1939), един от най-прославените учени на XX век, прекарва живота си като професор и психотерапевт във Виена, разработвайки теорията и практиката на психоанализата. Умира в изгнание в Лондон, където е принуден да емигрира след завладяването на Австрия от хитлеристка Германия.
Психоанализата е революционна за времето си теория за психичния живот, разкрила съществуването на несъзнавана психична дейност. Появата ѝ променя коренно дотогавашните представи за човешката психика. Едновременно с това Фройд разработва и метод за изследване на психиката и за лечение на психични разстройства, с което поставя началото на психотерапията.
През зимните семестри на 1915/1916 и 1916/1917 г. Фройд изнася двайсет и осем популярни лекции върху психоанализата пред широка аудитория във Виенския университет. В следващите години той доразвива своята теория и през 1932 г. написва още седем лекции, които отразяват новото в нея. Този том обединява двата цикъла лекции. Четенето им не изисква предварителни познания, те са поднесени достъпно и увлекателно и представляват може би най-подходящата първа стъпка за всеки, който иска да се запознае с психоанализата.
В това издание са включени две непревеждани досега лекции – „Преразглеждане на теорията за сънищата“ и „Сънища и окултизъм“, благодарение на което разполагаме с тяхното пълно събрание.
