Synopsis

Google recently made history with the release of its first tablet, the Nexus 7. Described by some as the first true competitor to the iPad and others as a threat to the Kindle Fire, the release follows several years of Nexus phones from Google. At under $200, the Nexus 7 is already selling quickly and is difficult to find in stores and online. Regular guy and gadget lover Lucas Allen decided to put the Nexus 7 to the test. For one day, he abandoned his iPad and Samsung Galaxy S2 phone in order to try to survive exclusively with the Nexus 7. As a Wi-Fi only tablet, this was no small challenge. In this account, he details how a regular day unfolds with no access to the internet, texting, or calling except through the Nexus 7. All facets of the the Nexus 7 and Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) are examined, with particular attention to the features that the average user will be most interested in. These include web browsing, Google Voice, Facebook, Twitter, podcasts, music, Hulu Plus, Netflix, eReader capabilities, and much more. The inevitable comparisons between the Nexus 7 and iPad are addressed throughout the book. Lucas Allen is a math teacher who blogs about educational technologies at Tech Powered Math. He is the author of the book series, TI-Nspire (TM) Tutorials: How to Dominate Math With the TI-Nspire Graphing Calculator.
