The men turned on a low light. They latched the big heavy door and put a huge chain across the bars. I looked around and saw that I was in what looked like a cargo hold. Stuffed burlap bags piled against one another like drunks in a jail cell. A sailor stomped his feet and a dozen rats scampered and scattered. I looked to my left and saw what seemed to be the petrified remains of an apelike creature clad in red boxer shorts. A chain was wound tightly around its neck. Cold chills washed over my body and I trembled. I quickly looked into eyes of the men who surrounded me. They were bright, lustful, and wild with a hunger. They gazed at me as if I were a lamb for them to skewer and devour.

“I want to see the captain of the ship. You have no right to kidnap me,” I said in the deepest man voice I could muster. But my voice was cracked and I sounded like a puppy yapping.
