Cipriano Méré, engenheiro francês, encontra-se em missão científica na região diamantífera do Transval. Por não ser rico viu recusadas as suas pretensões de casamento com a filha de um abastado proprietário local.
Cipriano resolve assim arriscar e experimentar a criação de diamantes em laboratório. Como resultado das suas experiências químicas, cria um magnífico e enorme diamante, batizado de «Estrela do Sul». Este diamante provoca um grande abalo na região, não fosse essa novidade colocar em risco os projetos e ambições de todos. Entretanto o diamante desaparece, e as suspeitas de roubo levam alguns dos personagens, entre eles o nosso cientista, a encetar um périplo pela região do Transval...
Esta história, delineada por Paschal Grousset, reescrita e adaptada por Júlio Verne e publicada em 1884 sob o tema "Viagens Extraordinárias", tem lugar na região do Transval -- atual África do Sul, -- e mostra mais uma vez a capacidade do escritor francês em antever o futuro, ainda que desta vez à luz dos acontecimentos políticos. No romance estão patentes alguns dos conflitos entre o império britânico e os colonos holandeses naquela região de África, que foram o gérmen da segunda guerra dos bóeres.
