Seine heilkräftige Quelle wurde bereits von den Römern geschätzt, die hier auf dem Boden einer illyrischen und später keltischen Siedlung ihr Militärlager aufgeschlagen hatten: Carnuntum, die "Stadt am Steinberg" (so der keltische Name) ist Österreichs größtes archäologisches Erbe, das zum "Archäologiepark" ausgebaut wurde. Dieser umfaßt auch die jüngsten Funde auf dem Pfaffenberg, die auf dem Areal des signifikanten, bis heute genutzten Steinbruchs von Bad Deutsch-Altenburg einen bedeutenden Kultplatz belegen. Die historische wie gegenwärtige Bedeutung von Bad Deutsch-Altenburg dokumentiert dieser Bildband.
