Synopsis

Surigao Strait in the Philippine Islands was the scene of a major battleship duel during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Because the battle was fought at night and had few survivors on the Japanese side, the events of that naval engagement have been passed down in garbled accounts. Anthony P. Tully pulls together all of the existing documentary material, including newly discovered accounts and a careful analysis of U.S. Navy action reports, to create a new and more detailed description of the action. In several respects, Tully's narrative differs radically from the received versions and represents an important historical corrective. Also included in the book are a number of previously unpublished photographs and charts that bring a fresh perspective to the battle.

The Pacific Naval War 1941-1945 is an account of the war between the Allies and the Japanese. In May 1987 the US guided missile frigate Stark sailing the waters of the Persian Gulf was suddenly blown apart by the air force of Iraq. In July 1988 nervous triggermen aboard the USS Vincennes shot an Iranian airliner out of the sky killing 300 civilians one month before the end of the war. This is the previously untold story of one of the most ferocious and prolonged air/naval battles ever: the battle at the radar picket stations during the American assault on Okinawa in the spring of 1945. It weaves together the experiences of the ships and their crews in a way that no one has attempted before. The US fleet and its accompanying airpower that took station off Okinawa was of gigantic proportions such that the Japanese could only rely on suicide attacks to inflict critical damage. While losses in the main fleet including damage to ships such as the Enterprise and Intrepid have been well covered less well known is the terrific battle waged on the radar picket line the fleet's outer defense against Japanese marauders. Of the 206 ships that served on radar picket duty 29 percent were sunk or damaged by Japanese air attacks making theirs the most hazardous naval surface duty in World War II. The great losses were largely due to the relentless nature of the kamikaze attacks but also the improper use of support gunboats failure to establish land-based radar at the earliest possible time the assignment of ships ill-equipped for picket duty and as time went on crew fatigue. The nature of the US air cover is also described in full as squadrons dashed from their carriers and land bases to intercept the Japanese swarms resulting in constant melees over the fleet. At times US pilots "chased" enemy planes into walls of AA fire while often having to brave it themselves. Toward the end of the battle the radar picket ships became the prime kamikaze targets as Japanese pilots despaired of getting through the "big blue blanket" of American fighter planes to reach larger prey. This work is based on primary sources including ship and aircraft action reports ship logs and personal interviews. Robin L. Rielly has written an engrossing narrative of air/naval combat combining firsthand action with astute tactical and strategic analysis.

CARRIER STRIKEThe Battle of the Santa Cruz IslandsOctober 1942By Eric HammelThe Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, a strategic naval action in the bitter Guadalcanal Campaign, was historys fourth carrier-versus-carrier naval battle. Though technically a Japanese victory, the battle proved to be the Empire of Japans last serious attempt to win the Pacific War by means of an all-out carrier confrontation. Only one other carrier battle occurred in the Pacific War, in June 1944, in the Philippine Sea. By then, however, the U.S. Navys Fast Carrier Task Force was operational, and Japans dwindling fleet of carriers was outnumbered and completely outclassed. Though hundreds of Japanese naval aviators perished in the great Marianas Turkey Shoot of June 1920, 1944, it was during the first four carrier battlesin the six-month period from early May through late October 1942that the fate of Japans small, elite naval air arm was sealed. It was at Coral Sea, in May, that Japans juggernaut across the Pacific was blunted. It was at Midway, in June, that Japans great carrier fleet was cut down to manageable size. And it was at Eastern Solomons, in August, and Santa Cruz, in October, that Japans last best carrier air groups were ground to dust. After their technical victory at Santa Cruz, the Japanese withdrew their carriers from the South Pacificand were never able to use them again as a strategically decisive weapon. Of the four Japanese aircraft carriers that participated in the Santa Cruz battle, only one survived the war. Following Santa Cruz and the subsequent series of air and surface engagements known as the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, the Imperial Navys Combined Fleet never again attempted a meaningful strategic showdown with the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Though several subsequent surface actions in the Solomons were clearly Japanese victories, their results were short-lived. After November 1942, Japan could not again muster the staying poweror the willpowerto wage a strategic war with her navy. Once the veteran carrier air groups had been shredded at Eastern Solomons and Santa Cruz, Japanese carriers ceased to be a strategic weapon. The Santa Cruz clash was deemed a Japanese victory because U.S. naval forces withdrew from the battlefield. That is how victory and defeat are strictly determined. But on the broader, strategic, level, the U.S. Navy won at Santa Cruzbecause it was able to achieve its strategic goal of holding the line and buying time. Japan was unable to achieve her strategic goal of defeating the U.S. Pacific Fleet in a final, decisive, all-or-nothing battle. The technical victory cost Japan any serious hope she had of winning the Pacific naval war. The victory at Santa Cruz cost Japan her last best hope to win the war in the Pacific.
