George Talbot Traherne is just doing his job on a fine autumn morning, keeping the hounds together for the huntsman of the Rowanton Hunt in Virginia along the Blue Ridge Mountain. Doesn’t pay to get distracted by a white stag in unfamiliar territory, though. Next thing you know, you might find yourself… somewhere else.

The land is the same but not the people. Their huntsman has just been murdered, and George is tapped for the job. It’s an emergency -- the Wild Hunt is only two weeks away, and if it doesn’t happen on schedule, the antlered god Cernunnos will take the realm from its ruler Gwyn ap Nudd and find someone who can mete out justice with the Hounds of Hell in his place.

George throws himself into the task, finding strength in the mission and resources he never knew he had. The more he comes to feel at home, settling into his new responsibilities, the more he wants to stay and make a life for himself. He’s finally met someone worth spending his life with, even if she’s just a bit older, a mere fifteen hundred years or so.

Can he keep the Wild Hunt on track despite the attempts to thwart it? Will he be accepted by those he wants to defend who view his timely presence and his human blood with suspicion? Above all, what does Cernunnos want of him and how far will he go? Can he survive the attention of a god?

Readers who are familiar with the sources of Arthurian literature such as the Mabinogion will recognize many of the characters, flourishing still in the world we cannot quite reach.

Gerry tells us about his 15 year journey of discovery by relating to some experiences in his life prior to recovery from alcoholic addiction and bi-polar affliction. The author applies a common saying or thought to every letter from “A” to “Z” and expands on the theme. In the “Awareness” segment, Gerry explains how this is the basis of all aspects of living. In “What’s In It For Me,” we learn of the benefits of enjoying the good life. He reflects on his “previous life” to show the difference between then and now. We do not have to be recovering from any addiction to relate to this book. Actually, if truth be known, we are all recovering from something. Some of us have had or have addictions to alcohol, drugs or we are simply stuck in a tired, boring life.

Remember the girl in school who carried around a notebook everywhere? You know the one: She was always scribbling down something, anything, whenever inspiration hit her. Did you ever wonder what she was writing all the time?

I think I can give you a pretty good idea...because, well, I was that girl.

One score and several years ago, a morose teenage girl took an interest in writing poetry...and systematically butchered it with every word she penned. Years later, a slightly less morose thirtysomething woman found a folder full of high rhymes and misdemeanors—and she couldn’t help but admire the train wreck she excreted on the page.

These characters work out their ambitions and their problems against the backdrop of 1950’s South Devon, where the population is just emerging from the period of post-war deprivation into the realisation of the benefits of owning the houses that they live in. But underlying their struggles is a mystery which goes back to before the Great War when a happy young couple set out to find a new life in America on board the Titanic.

This basic question of philosophy lies in the fundamental facts of our lives. Yes, there are material phenomena – physical or chemical phenomena, but there are also spiritual and mental phenomena such as consciousness and thought. This distinction between being and thinking enters into any act of human consciousness and behavior. Every individual distinguishes them self from that which surrounds them.

One is aware of oneself as something different from everything else. Thus one sees that no matter what phenomenon is considered, whether a person consciously realizes it or not, can always be placed in the sphere of either the material (Objective) or the spiritual (subjective). And yet, despite the differences between the objective and the subjective there is a definite connection between them. It is found that, on closer inspection, this relationship turns out to be a bond of interdependence. This interdependence is laid bare in the Elbibnarokdoc Philosophy Dissertation. Being unarmed in Philosophy can cost you a fruitful life.

Real children most certainly are not all cute and cuddly. Most of them are rather grubby, stinky and bad mannered…

The series is a collection of short, poignant stories about kids who are anything but cute or cuddly. In other words, real kids. There are rotten boys and smelly girls, all of them as real as the wind and the rain. These are the type of brats you’ll run into in school classrooms and playgrounds all over the world. The sort of brats who bump into you as you walk by and don’t apologise, the ones that break things and deny it was them, the ones with nasty habits, the ones who… well, you get the idea. The ‘Learning From Our Mistakes Series’ clearly sets out to show kids as they truly are, not how you imagine them to be, so please be warned. But just as night is followed by day, and winter by spring, there is always hope. Hope that kids can change, and who knows, even grow up someday to become good, hardworking, responsible adults.

Although you may be shocked, and even horrified by what you learn, the stories are fun, and strangely educational in their own way, with a moral take-home message. Kids and adults of all ages should find these tales enjoyable. But there are a number of important provisos. It is a fundamental requirement that, before reading any book from this series, you, the reader, whether you happen to be a child, a parent or other responsible or  irresponsible adult, must possess a keen sense of humour. Do not expect your life, or that of the children in your family to suddenly improve on account of reading any of the books from this series.

‘Piddling Patrick’ is the first story in this series. It is the tale of a five year old boy who always ignores his bladder. Things take an unpleasant turn one day when Patrick has an attack of ‘the wet-pants.’ Read and find out if he learns from his mistake!
