Synopsis

FORWARDIn only three weeks after completing my Last book Coxhoe & Kelloe revisited, I had received enough material to complete a further book in this series. It would be shameful if future gen-eration never saw these wonderful photographs from their families now in the past; so I decided to produce a further book on the area. Coxhoe & Kelloe revisited 2 as always I have tried to capture family life as it went on.Terry Hadfield contacted me with an amazing set of photo-graphs mainly from school days at Kelloe, they are absolute gems. I feel sure that people from Coxhoe and Kelloe will appreciate the chance to see friends from the area now probably in their seventies; Terrys collection features people the likes of Garbutt Richardson, Garbutt was a brilliant footballer signing professional forms but he died very young. Others featured are George Norman, Billy Powell, Jack Woodward, Brian Luke, Colin Weir, Terry McDonnell, Alfie Webb, R. Hesler, G. Robson, Jimmy Strong & M. Stoves to name just a few. Part of his collection was members of Coxhoe Working-mens Club from many years ago. Jimmy Ord, Pincer Wilson, Jad Carr, Mr. Weirs, George Hadwin & Norman Robson again just to mention a few. Terrys grandparents on their Diamond wedding, Mary & Isaac Hadfield, how many people in the present day will stay together sixty years; Mary Hadfield came to my home regularly & talked with my mother for hours about days in the past before discussing baking, cooking. I was always amazed at two people really enjoying conversation.Denise Heward sent me some photographs of her family and on the male side their involvement in the British army in the first world war Anthony Stokes Denises G Grandfather served with the Kings Own Lancashire regiment on the Eastern front at Salonika later back at Coxhoe Anthony was on the initial Committee that formed Coxhoe Co-op Store, Denise also sent me a photograph of a Coxhoe girls club photographed around 1959; this would seem a well organised club and I recognise many Coxhoe family names.Margaret Heslington the granddaughter of James Laing sent me some brilliant photographs of the Laing & Oliver families; the early family shows they were a very powerful Coxhoe family having at least three successful Inns around the 1900s also taking pos-session of Grange Farm about 1895, the Charabanc days out shows a tremendous public support. Later the photographs show the family progress from James Laings involvement with the British Expeditionary Force in France where he served with three different Regiments. James stayed with the British forces until the very finish of hostilities, even though he suffered with the affects of being gassed. Later the family survived intact after the 1926 recession. The Laing family are a very humble & unpretentious family that built their business over the years by sheer hard work and it has been a pleasure featuring them in the book. For many years the TMS bus service served Coxhoe, Kelloe & in-fact the whole of South West Durham; the bus Service was such a success that Philip Kirk & Peter Cardno wrote and compiled a bril-liant book about the Company. Philip gave me exclusive rights to reproduce parts of the story and graphics.
