Die Geschichte der Habsburger im 20. Jahrhundert: Dieter Kindermann ist ein persönlicher Freund der Familie Habsburg, er kennt ihre Geschichte und auch persönliche Details aus ihrem Leben wie kaum ein anderer. In diesem Buch spannt er den Bogen von 1918, als die kaiserliche Familie von Eckartsau ins Ausland floh, bis heute: Er blickt zurück auf das Leben von Ex-Kaiserin Zita, bei deren Rückkehr nach Österreich auch er eine Rolle spielte. Er porträtiert den leidenschaftlichen Europäer Otto Habsburg, Sohn des letzten Kaisers. Er erzählt von dessen Kindern, etwa Walburga Habsburg-Douglas, Abgeordnete im schwedischen Parlament, und Gabriela Habsburg, georgische Botschafterin in Deutschland, von Beruf Bildhauerin. Und natürlich von Karl Habsburg, Chef des heutigen Hauses Habsburg, und seiner Frau, der Kunstmäzenin Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza. Entstanden ist ein Buch, das ein facettenreiches, noch kaum erforschtes Bild der heutigen Familie Habsburg zeichnet und in Rückblenden ein Stück österreichischer Geschichte erzählt.
