Um pobre casal londrino têm o seu décimo terceiro filho, e, concluindo que não tem meios para o sustentar, o pai decide livrar-se dele, lançando-o ao rio. Entretanto a sociedade interpõe-se à liberdade paterna de dispor da vida do filho, e o pequeno ser é recolhido, depois de uma larga discussão popular, por uma associação católica romana. Como os pais da criança são protestantes, o ato é mal visto pelos correligionários dessa religião. O bebé entra assim numa acesa disputa sobre quem deverá encarregar-se da sua educação.
