Moby-Dick; or, The Whale by Herman Melville is considered to be one of the Great American Novels and indeed one of the greatest novels of world literature. The novel follows the adventures of a wandering sailor, Ishmael, and his voyage on the whaleship Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab. Ishmael discovers that Ahab has one purpose: to seek out a single whale called Moby Dick, a ferocious, enigmatic white sperm whale. Captain Ahab has been driven to take revenge on Moby Dick after a previous voyage when the whale destroyed his boat and bit off his leg. The novel was published in 1851, and although it initially met with mixed reviews it is now considered to be part of the canon of Western Literature.

Born in wartime London's east end, Billy Webb grew up in the violence of air-raids and street warfare. His first weapon was a knuckleduster which he had made to measure for the price of five cigarettes when he was 11. When he first met the Krays they were scraping a living by doorknocking for old clothes to be sold in street markets. For three years he and the twins were on the run together as army deserters, and over the course of time, he was a friend, ally and foe of the Krays in their violent rise to fame.

In 1919, Michael Collins conceived of a scheme to knock out the eyes and ears of the British Administration at Dublin Castle by undermining and terrorising the police so that the British would react blindly and drive the Irish people into the arms of the Irish Republican Army.

The Bureau of Military History interviewed those involved in this scheme in the early 1950s with the assurance that the material would not be published in their lifetimes. A few of the contributions were made available by the families of those involved, but the bulk of them have only recently been released.

This is the first book to make use of those interviews. It makes fascinating, almost unique reading, because they contain first-hand descriptions in which men speaking candidly of their involvement in killing selected people at close range.

As a result it throws a considerable amount of new light on the activities of the Squad and the intelligence operations of Michael Collins.
