Jack Londons Classics: The Call of the Wild and White Fang

Moby-Dick; or, The Whale by Herman Melville is considered to be one of the Great American Novels and indeed one of the greatest novels of world literature. The novel follows the adventures of a wandering sailor, Ishmael, and his voyage on the whaleship Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab. Ishmael discovers that Ahab has one purpose: to seek out a single whale called Moby Dick, a ferocious, enigmatic white sperm whale. Captain Ahab has been driven to take revenge on Moby Dick after a previous voyage when the whale destroyed his boat and bit off his leg. The novel was published in 1851, and although it initially met with mixed reviews it is now considered to be part of the canon of Western Literature.

When the present leader is taken off to jail, Lance becomes the new leader of the Outlaws and takes them to new heights of popularity and debauchery. Eventually becoming too big for the small town, Lance joins the New York Yankees but folds under big league pressure and finds himself banned from the game for life.

Too embarrassed to return to New Paltz, Lance travels from the Caribbean to Hollywood and goes through a variety of professions from being a stuntman for an egotistical soap opera star to hitting rock bottom and becoming an exotic dancer and actor in amateur adult films.

ABOUT JACK LONDON

John Griffith "Jack" London (born John Griffith Chaney, January 12, 1876 – November 22, 1916) was an American author, journalist, and social activist. He was a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone.

He is best remembered as the author of Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen", and of the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf.

London was a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers and wrote several powerful works dealing with these topics such as his dystopian novel, The Iron Heel and his non-fiction exposé, The People of the Abyss.
