Synopsis

El autor de esta corta historia nació en Ciudad Habana, Cuba durante los años en que el estalinismo de los camaradas Castros—plural—hacía de las suyas. Una de las primeras barbaridades que inventaron fue separar a los niños de sus padres y familias, encerrándolos en becas ‘del futuro’, similares a campos de concentración civiles, donde los muchachos volvían a sus hogares solo unas horas durante el fin de semana llegando con sus estómagos vacíos. Cada día teníamos que realizar trabajo agrícola compulsorio, de forma gratuita, bajo el hiriente sol cubano, y mientras recibíamos una alimentación miserable.
Si usted ‘like cheese’ o tiene gustos dudosos, esta vez le sorprenderá escuchar que por primera vez en mi vida palpé una fresa cuando tenía 11 años de edad trabajando en esos campos agrícolas, rodeados por una cerca metálica que les ayudaba a ‘ellos’, para mantenernos dentro de los perímetros establecidos, y ser capaces de verificar periódicamente que ninguno de ‘nosotros’, los estudiantes, fuéramos lo suficiente valientes como para tragarnos alguna de esas milagrosas frutas.

Al final de esa jornada obligatoria de trabajo agrícola, además de todo lo escuchado, se nos mandaba que abriéramos nuestra cavidad bucal, y revisar por entre los dientes si tuvimos el coraje de siquiera probar ni uno solo de esos frutos prohibidos. Si fueras descubierto llevándote una sola a vuestra boca, no se te permitiría entonces regresar a casa en visita corta de medio fin de semana; permaneciendo en la cárcel escolar; siempre apartadas de las ciudades y en el medio de la nada. Así y todo algunos de nosotros lo arriesgábamos todo y nos escapábamos para ‘La Cueva de Quivicán’, bajo tierra, siendo el único incentivo para olvidar, aunque por solo instantes, la esquizofrenia de tal sociedad.

Esperamos que al leer reflexione acerca de sus bendiciones ‘aquí-ahora’, y entienda que estas cosas suceden en la vida real, aunque a veces la ficción parece apoderarse de ellas.
