Clara Laguna es una hermosa joven de un pueblo español de finales del siglo XIX. Cuando se enamora de un hombre rico, su madre, una hechicera tuerta, le previene de la maldición de las Laguna: están condenadas a sufrir el desamor y a engendrar niñas que también sufrirán mal de amores. Así, el hombre la abandona tras dejarla embarazada y Clara, ciega de rabia, abre un burdel en la casona roja, en las afueras del pueblo. Allí da a luz a Manuela, una niña fea y marchita. Mientras Clara se convierte en la prostituta más solicitada de la zona, Manuela se cría con Bernarda, la cocinera barbuda. Con el paso de los años, el odio hacia su madre y la firme convicción de que sólo acabará con la maldición si limpia de vicio el nombre mancillado de las Laguna harán que Manuela se vuelva una mujer marcada por el fanatismo. Tras la muerte de Clara, Manuela viaja a Galicia una temporada y regresa a la casona roja con una nueva Laguna en sus entrañas. La recién nacida, Olvido, se convierte en una niña más bella que la abuela y, por mucho que Manuela la tenga encerrada en la casona, no puede evitar que Esteban, el hijo del maestro, se quede prendado de ella.
