Erid haust seit drei Jahren einsam in einer Höhle. Seit er seine Gefährtin verloren hat, zählt für ihn nur das schlichte Überleben. Da taucht in der Ferne ein seltsames Licht auf. Am gleichen Tag sucht eine verletzte Wölfin bei ihm Schutz. In Erid kehrt die Neugier zurück.
Merkwürdiges geschieht, während er mit der Wölfin durch Schnee und Frost den Ursprung des Lichts sucht; und immer wieder scheint die Wölfin klüger als er. Eine alte Frau, die ein Stück des gefahrvollen Weges mit ihnen teilt, lehrt Erid neues Vertrauen. Und schließlich begegnet er Miriam ...
