Synopsis

Herbert Wolff, ingeniero alemán que construye el ferrocarril del Pacífico entre Cali y Buenaventura, decide perder la memoria al darse cuenta que todo su proyecto ha significado el inicio de la destrucción del país que antes consideraba un paraíso primigenio, no viciado por los excesos del progreso. Sin embargo, y contradictoriamente, como un mecanismo para salvarse a sí mismo, para evitar el desajuste en la identidad que causa el olvido, decide crear un registro fotográfico y escrito de lo que olvida. La novela es la reconstrucción de la identidad del ingeniero, la redención de su memoria, por medio de cuatro textos diferentes: Faraón Angola, quien adopta a Herbert como padre, cuenta su telemaquia personal; una antología épica de la construcción del ferrocarril hecha por Faraón con los registros mnemotécnicos de su padre temporal; los videoescritos de Divina Rosa en los que se narra la destrucción del ferrocarril, la construcción, con sus detritos, de chatarra como obra de arte y la develación de la identidad de una mujer; de manera dispersa por toda la novela los tres textos anteriores son leídos en voz alta por Divina Rosa durante un pervertido acto sexual con Faraón Angola. En estas relaciones paternales, amorosas y sexuales, cada uno de los personajes intenta reconstruir la identidad de Herbert Wolff mientras se narra a sí mismo. Como fondo social, Cali, mientras tanto, se debate entre la posibilidad de dar un paso hacia la modernidad o de mantenerse en un estado premoderno, entre un Jorge Isaacs que apoya la construcción del ferrocarril al tiempo que escribe María, la novela de la hacienda esclavista, entre la utopía del progreso y el ideal del mundo primigenio, entre los vicios urbanos y el desarraigo y el paludismo y las tarántulas rojas, entre la lógica del libro y la del cine y las telenovelas.
