Synopsis

"Never again should such a disaster occur," lamented Titanic survivor Millvina Dean. When the RMS Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, after colliding with a rogue iceberg, many had ideas for how to avoid similar tragedies in the future. Macro-engineer Richard B. Cathcart revisits one of these ideas 100 years later in the ebook, Macro-Engineering the North Atlantic to Prevent Another Titanic. An early 20th century engineer, Carroll Livingston Riker, proposed constructing a jetty in the Atlantic Ocean to divert interference between the Gulf Stream and Labrador Current. Riker explained that this action would reduce the movement of icebergs, create more temperate climates in the Northern Hemisphere, and expand the coastline of the United States. This proposal eventually became a bill before Congress. Cathcart reviews Riker’s proposal and explains its implications through a modern-day analysis. This ebook contains Cathcart’s new analysis, the original 1912 Congressional bill, and the text of Riker’s original proposal, verified against the original publications by experts.
