The parables have not only suffered from neglect but have fallen foul to misunderstanding and misinterpretation. There is confusion today in both the pew and the pulpit. Instead of allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture, many have resorted to, and relied on, tried, but not trusted traditions. If we count and consider the amount of books available on this subject, we will be surprised and disappointed by the standard and substance. There is less than a shelfful of books that might be called both spiritual and substantial. The number of publications that make compelling reading, and satisfy and sanctify the soul of its readers; are few and far between. There is a common consensus amongst conservative Christians that the New Testament contains thirty or more parables. Some scholars, for instance, have married together two parables such as the lost sheep and coin and made them a couplet of one. And of course, some have done the opposite and divided one parable in to two. This means there is a measure of disparity amongst writers with regard to the total number of parables. Within this present work, about the parables of Jesus, there are a total of thirty fi ve chapters; each one devoted to an exposition of the particular parable. When Jesus explained, illustrated and applied the parables of the Kingdom, He sometimes used a pen to write a story and on other occasions He used a brush to paint a picture. The old saints used to describe the parables as “Perfect Portraits.” They believed that Jesus was portrayed in every parabolic picture that is presented on the pages of the Holy Bible. In one of the parables Jesus asks a profound question about His return, Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really fi nd faith on the earth? (Luke 18:8). The implication of the question is that He will not. Many believe that Jesus is talking about the quantity of faith, but it is the quality of faith that concerns Christ. What is of paramount importance is that we all have the right faith. Second best, or, silver, is not good enough for God; only pure gold will suffi ce. We all need the faith that comes from hearing and hearing by the word of God. Many of the Puritans preached like a goods train, slow and sluggish but Mr. Thomas Watson was a cut above his contemporaries. His messages were more like an express train, faster and fuller. He was known to say, “Faith is the ring the Father puts on His child’s fi nger.” As the days grow shorter and the nights grow darker we sense the coming of Christ is drawing nearer. What we need in the last hours of the last days is men of faith who Mr. Stephen Olford said will take the “Book of God and preach the Son of God by the Spirit of God.” May this book go some small way to cause men to have warm hearts, wet eyes and willing spirits. Maranatha! The Lord comes!
