Synopsis

Vor Amundsen scheiterten schon viele bedeutende Entdecker bei dem Versuch, einen Seeweg durch das eisige Labyrinth der arktischen Inseln im Norden Amerikas zu finden, so etwa Sebastian Cabot, James Cook und John Franklin. Doch das Verhängnis seiner Vorgänger beflügelte den jungen Norweger und ihre Fehler dienten ihm als Inspiration. 1903 erwirbt Amundsen den Fischkutter "Gjöa", stellt eine Expedition zusammen und wagt das scheinbar Unmögliche. Drei Jahre sollte die Reise durch die unkartierten Wasserstraßen dauern, bis Amundsen endlich das ihm durch die Beringstraße entgegenkommende Walfangschiff Charles Hanson sichtet. Nun hat der Norweger die endgültige Gewissheit, als erster Mensch in der Geschichte die Nordwestpassage durchquert zu haben.
