“Oh, not good,” Zelenka said, and followed it in Czech with what sounded like something heartfelt. “We have systems shutting down — internal sensors, power to the weapons chair —”

“Get that thing shut down,” Lorne said.

“Yes, I am trying —”

“What the hell is going on?” Sheppard said, tearing up the stairs into the control room, wearing sweatpants tucked into the tops of his boots and a flannel shirt he hadn’t bothered to tuck in at all.

“This is Rodney’s work,” Zelenka said. “His programs are shutting down our security systems, and I cannot stop it. I am afraid we are going to lose the iris.”

“Security teams to the gateroom,” Sheppard said into his radio. “Sound a citywide alarm.”

Salawi’s hands moved uncertainly over her keyboard, but it was only seconds before the alarm sounded.

“Put me on citywide,” Sheppard said, and waited for Salawi’s quick nod before he went on. “This is Colonel Sheppard. Assume that as of now we are facing an attack by unknown hostiles who are trying to get through the Stargate. I want security teams on full alert —”

Zelenka breathed a curse in Czech, all the more alarming because his tone was hushed rather than heated. “The iris is shutting down…”

Ronon dropped into the chair beside Radek, his water in his hand. “Dead world. Nobody lives there, but somebody dialed New Athos three times.” He took a gulp of his water. “Where’d they come from? If nobody lives there and they dialed New Athos three times, but nowhere else, those are our guys.”

“I don’t see…” Woolsey began.

“They came from a hive ship,” Teyla put in. “It is the logical conclusion. The ship remained in orbit around an uninhabited world while the Darts attacked New Athos. Once they had what they sought they returned through the gate and rejoined the hive ship. They did not dial anywhere else, and they are not still there.”

“Three times?”

Teyla nodded. “Once to scout, once to send the message that lured us to New Athos, and once to seize… their prize.” She could not quite bring herself to say, ‘to seize Rodney.’ That was too raw.

John sat up straight, his eyes meeting Woolsey’s down the table. “If we get a jumper and go back…”

Woolsey frowned. “What will that give you?”

Radek glanced from one to the other, addressing himself to John rather than Woolsey. “The hive ship has certainly opened a hyperspace window. We did not detect them in orbit and they have had three days to go anywhere they wish. I do not think there is more information we can gain on M40-P36.”

John’s hands opened and closed in frustration. “We have to,” he began tiredly.

“We have to find another means of intelligence,” Woolsey said.

“Rodney…”

“We will find Dr. McKay,” Woolsey said. “But if there’s no more information to be had this way, we need to find another way.”

End game

The battle lines are drawn. Queen Death is mustering her fleet. But who will stand against her?

THE CITY shook, but it was not as bad as before. Zelenka could keep his feet easily enough, hanging on to the edge of the console.

The cameras fogged, vapor streaming past. A high cloud layer? Possibly. Probably. All systems were still green. The ZPMs’ power level was ticking downward, but not quickly. Fifteen per cent…fourteen per cent.

TRANSITIONS

“I repeat, Colonel. What the hell happened?”

“Uh…”

Oh damn, he knew that frown. She was about to techno-babble. Given the way his head felt, he probably wouldn’t survive that. “Twenty-five words or less, and no more than three syllables each, Carter!”

“Jack! Sam!” Daniel came climbing over the mounds of rubble, Teal’c in his wake. They looked a little singed around the edges, but otherwise seemed to be in full working order. “You guys okay?” gasped Daniel. “What the hell happened?”

“That’s what I’m trying to find out. Carter!”

“When the missile struck the car, the blast took out the gas pumps and set off whatever fuel was left in the underground tanks. Twenty-four words, sir.” She grinned. “There was a chance that some of the shrapnel might hit the chopper, but I hadn’t actually dared count on it. I guess there was a little more gas in those tanks than I’d thought…”

The rock of Aegis…

RELIQUARY

The spiral design in the center of the chamber floor was moving, becoming three-dimensional as the little metal tiles forming it shifted fluidly. The whole floor was still vibrating, making the glass and metal debris jump and dance. Something groaned again below their feet, and the spiral began to sink into the floor.

Standing at John’s elbow, McKay glared at Kavanagh, his mouth twisted in annoyance. “What did you do?”

John wasn’t thrilled either. “Some warning would have been nice, Doctor.”

Teyla and Ford watched the spiral uneasily, Kolesnikova a few steps behind them. Kavanagh shook his head, his eyes still on the metal sinking into the floor, his gaze rapt. “I wasn’t sure it was really here, if the power source was still active. If I was...imagining it...”

The groaning rumble of metal parts undisturbed for ages was growing louder, and John wasn’t sure he had heard right. “What?” he said, having to raise his voice over the din. “Why did you think you were imagining it?”

“I was imagining what?” Distracted, Rodney stepped sideways, moving along the edge of the shaft, craning his neck to watch the spiral’s progress.

“I wasn’t talking to you,” John shouted back, “I was—”

“Wait.” Rodney straightened up suddenly, looking at John. “It occurs to me that something may come out of here that could kill us.”

John swore and yelled, “Fall back, now!”

The Stargate Atlantis team discover a city on a moon that's about to plunge into its own sun. But the city which looked as if it had been abandoned turns out to be inhabited by descendants of the Ancients who have fallen into decadence and debauchery. Faced with a dissolute society disinterested in their own fate and unable to escape, the team must fight their way free before being plunged into a fiery death.

TEASER

THE WOARD LIFTED ITSELF UP on one arm and turned. The two combatants came face to face. Teyla was a little shaky, but she held the blade out and stood her ground. The Woard saw her. It tried another roar, but the sound was feeble — a shadow of its former strength and rage. It half rose, and it seemed the effort would be too much for it. Teyla looked ready to drop the blade and walk away, but in that second of hesitation the Woard lunged.

Every bit of its remaining life went into that final attack. Teyla staggered back. She held the blade high, and the Woard’s weight drove it down over the cold, hard steel. The creature’s momentum took it forward, and it fell heavily atop Teyla, who was lost from sight.

“No!” Rodney cried out.

In that moment, the image on the screen dimmed, and grew dark. The panel in the wall closed, and the team were left to stare at one another in shock as the crowd’s cheer erupted in the arena above.

Ronon Dex is a mystery. His past is a closed book and he likes it that way. But when the Atlantis team trigger a trap that leaves them stranded on a hostile world, only Ronon's past can save them - if it doesn't kill them first. As the gripping tale unfolds, we return to Ronon's earliest days as a Runner and meet the charismatic leader who transformed him into a hunter of Wraith. But grief and rage can change the best of men and it soon becomes clear that those Ronon once considered brothers-in-arms are now on the hunt - and that the Atlantis team are their prey. Unless Ronon can out hunt the hunters, Colonel Sheppard's team will fall victim to the vengeance of the V'rdai.

“I KNOW who’s after us.”

“You do?” That didn’t exactly make Rodney feel better. “By reputation, or personally?”

Again the hesitation before Ronon answered. “Personally. And we have to watch our every step from here on out.”

“Who is it?” Rodney wanted to know. Well, no, deep down he didn’t want to know at all. But he needed to know.

The answer was one he hadn’t expected. “Runners.”

“Other runners?” Rodney stared at him. “Like you?”

He felt the air move as Ronon shook his head.

“No. Not like me. Not any more.”

“Then like what? Who are they? How do you know them? What do they want?” Rodney was both horrified and fascinated. Before they’d met Ronon they’d never even heard of a Runner, but apparently the concept was legendary among all the worlds touched by the Wraith—a lone individual, caught by the Wraith but released and then hunted down. For sport. Most Runners didn’t last very long, a week or two at most—they were said to be chosen for their cunning and their skills but the Wraith had been hunting and killing for centuries.

Ronon had been a Runner for seven years.

If these others were even half as good at hunting and fighting as he was, they had a serious problem on their hands.
