“Watch out, Betsy, some of these old floorboards may be treacherous.” I followed Aunt Maggie through the rooms full of cracked plaster, floor debris and the ever-present graffiti sprayed on the walls of the former tuberculosis hospital.

Aunt Maggie was a tiny woman at four-foot-eight, and the world often towered above her. Her height was the only part of her that was small. She had the strongest will and the biggest heart in Texas.

“This is going to be great when we film here on Halloween, the scariest night of the year. I’m so glad you decided to help us out and took a few hours away from your tip-writin’ column. The Pecan Bayou Texas Paranormal Society thanks you, and if we find a ghost – boy howdy – I thank you.”

For our other-worldly walk-through today, Aunt Maggie dressed for the occasion with a black cap on her head adorned with glow-in-the-dark letters that read “Paranormal Investigator.”

“You like it?” she asked, noticing my gaze. “I ordered one for everyone on the crew and a few extras. I thought we ought to look official, bein’ on TV and all.” My aunt’s honey-colored bouffant hairdo was all crammed up in the cap with sprayed curls poking out in places.

“Can’t wait to wear mine.” I was not someone who looked terrific in a ball cap. At least that was what Barry had said. Funny how after all these years I still felt rejected by him.

Maggie crunched around on the fallen trash in the main hallway. As we came to the end of the hallway, her voice lowered slightly. “This up here was what they called the ‘dead tunnel.’ I saw it in the blueprints Howard had.” Howard was the head of Aunt Maggie’s paranormal group. Even though sometimes he looked like a person mental health officials might be interested in observing, he was extremely intelligent and had a doctorate in paranormal psychology. I didn’t even know a person could get a degree in ghost hunting, but Howard had achieved this greatness.

Maggie continued her story. “It was the tunnel they used to wheel the bodies to the morgue. That way the patients wouldn’t see someone had died.” I never was one to get too frightened by horror movies, but coming into this part of the hospital certainly had me qualifying for an official case of the heebie-jeebies. The dead tunnel was windowless and grimy, and I felt as if we were walking into a mineshaft, not a morgue.

Mace Of Spades - In the second installment of the Grandfather Mummy Series, Jo and Ava Skinner are now the owners of a Bed and Breakfast Inn, established in Jo's Grandmother's homestead. Things are running smoothly until a Consortium Man comes to town wanting to buy the Inn for a new health spa ranch. They hope to exploit the fact that Jo's granddad, Hank, was mummified and lives to tell about. With the notion that the arid climate helps life's longevity they hope to make a killing. It may stop Edna from her bi-weekly tirades about the Inn's guest's invading her territory and opening up her borders to demons and hell hounds. When Edna is found dead, killed by an antique medieval mace, Jo is the first and apparently the only suspect, due to a rather loud and well witnessed argument with the victim that very day. It's up to Jo, Hank, and Ava to find the true culprit. But that's a lot easier said then done. Most particularly since Edna was not well liked in town. There may be too many possible murderers. This leads the three sleuths in a character filled humorous chase to catch the real killer and clear Jo's name.

Retired octogenarian schoolteacher Myrtle Clover is fit to be tied when her book club votes to change to a supper club. Who wants chips and dip when they can have Dickens and Twain?

It isn’t easy being a murder victim. Most particularly if the murder part didn’t take. Then to add insult to injury, you end up being stuffed into a trunk for some seventy odd years in an extremely arid climate which causes your body to mummify. But this is exactly what happened to Hank Skinner. Now a shriveled shadow of his former manly self, but much to his relief, still very much a man, Hank is discovered in the attic of his wife’s house by his granddaughter, Jo. As it turns out, his wife, May, had tried to kill him when she caught him in bed with another woman. She did however succeed in killing his well endowed bank robbing mistress, Clash, and stuffing her remains in another trunk in the attic.

The discovery of her granddad’s mummified - yet living - remains doesn’t help Jo’s mental state too terribly much. She’s already dealing with turning forty, she doesn’t need her long- thought- fugitive grandfather to suddenly reappear, most particularly in a mummified state. It also doesn’t help that he keeps hitting on her - not really believing she‘s his granddaughter. The one good thing that does come from her discovery is that it proves her granddad didn’t help Clash rob the bank. But if Clash was killed right after robbing the bank then just where is the money? It’s not in the attic, so where could Clash have hidden it? It’s this very search that leads Jo, Hank, Ava (Jo's Mother) and her sister Faye, on a rather humorous and mind-boggling adventure.
