False lameness is an impediment in the gait not caused by structural or functional disturbances, but is brought on by conditions such as may result from the too rapid driving of an unbridle-wise colt over an irregular road surface, or by urging a horse to trot at a pace exceeding the normal gait of the animals capacity, causing it to crow-hop or to lose balance in the stride.

...Subjects of this kind may not be sufficiently inconvenienced to warrant their being taken out of service, yet a lame horse, no matter how slightly affected, should not be continued in service unless it can be positively established that the degree of discomfort occasioned by the claudication is small and the work to be done by the animal, of the sort that will not aggravate the condition.

...In the consideration of group causes, lameness may be said to originate from affections of bones, ligaments, thecae and bursae, muscles and tendons, nerves, lymph vessels and glands, and blood vessels, and may also result from an involvement of one or several of the aforementioned tissues, caused by rheumatism.

Do not be looking at this little book for your horse crazy daughter. Although it includes a basic how-to for riding, choosing the right horse for your riding level and how to buy basic tack, this is definitely horse crazy for grown-ups. In fact, this is the book for riding and loving horses well past the age most people get into the hobby. If you want to know how it’s different, it starts out with me shooting a television commercial in Auckland, New Zealand with then-Prince Phillip (the not yet divorced spouse of Princess Anne.) The commercial was for PG Tips and the client was crazy for horses and royals. The result was a directive to create a commercial containing both (plus the tea product).

Learning to ride after forty is one story, and learning to do it in a country ten thousand miles away from your home and family is another.  But this book manages to combine the two. (Fortunately, New Zealand is as close as one can get to paradise on Earth and so that mitigated some of the more jarring adjustments.)
