Widely considered to be Dickens’s greatest satire on poverty, Little Dorrit is the story of Amy “Little” Dorrit’s struggle to hold her poverty-stricken family together in the face of her father’s imprisonment in the Marshalsea debtor’s prison. Called the “child of the Marshalsea,” Little Dorrit struggles to support her family as a seamstress while dreaming of a future free of the Marshalsea.

Little Dorrit was originally published as a serial between 1855 and 1857 as a critique of the British debtor’s prisons, in which debtors were imprisoned and unable to work until their debts were paid. The story pulls significantly from Dickens’s own experience as the child of an imprisoned debtor.

The Mayor of Casterbridge, like Jude the Obscure and Far From the Maddening Crowd, is set in Hardy’s fictional county of Wessex. It is regarded as Hardy’s greatest “Novel of Character and Environment.” As in his other novels, Hardy’s characters struggle to console their passions with their social circumstances. A version of The Mayor of Casterbridge called The Claim, starring Sarah Polley, Wes Bentley and Milla Jovovich, was filmed in 2000 with the setting changed to the prospecting northwest of the nineteenth century.

How thin is the line between good and evil?

Dr Jekyll has been experimenting with his identity. He has developed a drug which separates the two sides of his nature and allows him occasionally to abandon himself to his most corrupt inclinations as the monstrous Mr Hyde. Frankenstein was first published anonymously in London in 1818, reflecting English biases towards female authors, and Mary Shelley was not credited as the author of Frankenstein until the French edition was published in 1823. Frankenstein has had a lasting influence on literary tradition, opening the door to literary horror as a genre, and is widely recognized as the first work of science fiction. It has been adapted for film, television, and stage, as well as providing the basis for new works of literary fiction.
