Synopsis

The Cherry Orchard one of the plays in this Collection written by Russian playwright Anton Checkhov. It premiered at the Moscow Art Theatre 17 January 1904 in a production directed by Constantin Stanislavski.

The other plays in this collection are: ON THE HIGH ROAD, THE PROPOSAL, THE WEDDING, THE BEAR, A TRAGEDIAN IN SPITE OF HIMSELF, THE ANNIVERSARY, THE THREE SISTERS

The play is based on an aristocratic Russian woman and her family. As they return to the family's estate which includes a very well-known cherry orchard that has to be auctioned to pay the mortgage. Even though all family members try to save the estate it become more about courtship and who the girls of the family could marry off to save the family reputation. With social gathers to go to and agreements to be mad about the family estate, it becomes less important to fund their debt. The play concludes with the estate being sold. The family leaves the estate and all of their childhood memories behind them to start and enjoy their new lives. As they walk away from the house to the sounds of the cherry orchard being cut down by its new owner.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, born 1860 was a Russian short story writer, playwright and physician. He is considered to be one of the greatest short writers in the history of world literature. Anton practised as a doctor throughout his whole literary career, as he said once ""Medicine is my lawful wifeÖand literature is my mistress."" in a letter to Alexei Surorin, 11 September 1888. At the age of forty four in 1904 Mr Chekhov passed away, but his legacy lives on through his books and plays that are still being read by many.
