Mansfield Park is a novel by Jane Austen, written at Chawton Cottage between February 1811 and 1813. It was published in May 1814 by Thomas Egerton, who published Jane Austen's two earlier novels, Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice. When the novel reached a second edition in 1816, its publication was taken over by John Murray, who also published its successor, Emma.

The Age of Innocence centers on one society couple's impending marriage and the introduction of a scandalous woman whose presence threatens their happiness. Though the novel questions the assumptions and mores of turn of the century New York society, it never devolves into an outright condemnation of the institution. In fact, Wharton considered this novel an "apology" for the earlier, more brutal and critical, "The House of Mirth". Not to be overlooked is the author's attention to detailing the charms and customs of this caste. The novel is lauded for its accurate portrayal of how the nineteenth-century East Coast American upper class lived and this combined with the social tragedy earned Wharton a Pulitzer - the first Pulitzer awarded to a woman.

Young Catherine Morland, the naive but winsome heroine of this nineteenth century comedy of manners, is thrust into fashionable society for the first time after being invited to Bath. Here she is initiated into life, attending various balls and meeting new and interesting members of the English gentry. But upon a visit to Northanger Abbey, the mysterious and forbidding abode of the father of her suitor, her obsession with the Gothic literature of the day leads her to believe that the estate is full of unimaginable horrors.
