A man returns from WWI physically OK, except for a severe dis figuration of his face. His wife hadsent him a Dear John letter during the war and he was later listed as dead. The only remnant of his past possessions is a stand of timber in Canada. At the end of the war, he retreats to the seclusion of this northern ceder forest. One can find much in such an out-of-the-way place, even one's former wife. With his facial scars, he has little hope for a normal life, until he finds Doris, a blind girl who loves him for what he is, not the way he looks. Sinclair makes one love the hidden places of the rugged and beautiful section of the Northwest in which his story is laid, and he has given us a book which is filled with the mingled awe and spirit of adventure that enfold the dwellers in the wilderness and which is also a genuine human document.
