The Island

Ron Halestrom is a new author, one successful book behind him, who moves into a new home with his family, to write more. But naturally, Gabor House has a dark secret which is trying to drive them away. Two hundred years before, it was the old manor house: home to the Mainwarings, owners of much of the locality. Young children had been going missing, but it took their own daughter Isobel's disappearance for them to send out a search party. They find Bemorra, the local imbecile, throwing her into the Gabor Pool. Bemorra is hanged until he is dead, but he has enough time to curse the locals.

Ray Tyler, an unhappy bank clerk and self-sufficiency freak, buys an old book from his local bookshop. However, after reading it, he finds that he is gradually turning into a violent beast driven solely by murder and rape: in short a werewolf. His increasingly erratic behaviour earns him the sack from the bank, and three rapes and two murders later, he is on the run from the police.

Cold as death, the sudden mist seeped and coiled through the wood. Naked and terror stricken, the girl floundered ever deeper through the undergrowth and the clinging black mud, desperate to escape her pursuer. But in front a worse horror waited. For with the mist came the figures from the past - from many pasts - lurching through the blinding whiteness, reaching out to clutch, choke and smother the wood!

The Black Hill werewolf, Philip Owen, has been dead for a year, and there have been no further outrages. Until now, that is, and the new maulings coincide with the disappearance from his grave of Philip Owen's body. Gordon Hall, the man who caught Owen a year before, returns to the Black Hill to help with the search, and when Owen's body is found, he realises that there is a new werewolf loose.

Peter Fogg, a writer, moves to a country cottage in Wales to write his next book. But everything seems to be against him: the locals are hostile to outsiders (and to the English), their pets are sacrificed on the local stone circle, and malicious tricks are being played on him. His wife and son soon withdraw from the battleground, leaving Fogg to stand his ground on his own.

Ann Rawsthorne takes up her new appointment as arts teacher at a private school in the Highlands of Scotland, expecting a quiet and lonely time. She finds life is anything but quiet, with boys falling into bogs and dying on the games field, none of which is helped one jot by the headmaster, who seems a little on the sadistic and dictatorial side. This turns out to be because he is the leader of a Satanic coven whose avowed aim is to raise from the dead the founder of the school.
