She warned us to never take kalua pig from a luau. She spoke of demons crawling out of the lava to take the forms of sharks and killer whales. A beautiful girl who’d been turned into a dolphin protected surfers when the big waves came. A tornado filled with water and eels had been born in Pailolo Channel—it entered the calm confines of Halawa and followed the river into the gulch. Her mo’opuna Kaui had been netting prawns when the tornado tried swallowing him up. The more she spoke, the more her eyes grew in intensity. A fire kindled inside of her.
