The Last Mountain is a suspense thriller with a difference.
Mel is an aging climber, a wannabe adventure writer whose ambition exceeds his abilities. He finds himself in a pub in England's Peak District, haunted by the memories of what has just happened to him. He is encouraged to tell his story by his table companion, an old man who Mel has never met before.
Mel does tell his story - the tale of an Himalayan expedition that went horribly wrong - though he finds it increasingly difficult to do so. Meanwhile, half-familiar figures come into the pub and disappear into a back room whislt the old man becomes increasingly hostile towards Mel.
In the end Mel has to face up to one final, appalling truth.
Critics have universally given The Last Mountain 5 Star reviews:
'This is one of those novels that, once you start reading, you can't put down, and once you've finished, the story continues swirling around in your head. Although the context is climbing, this is a novel that questions motivation, ambition and self-preservation when under threat. The characters aren't all likeable, but they're vividly portrayed and you understand what's driving them. Although there's quite a bit of technical climbing information in there, this adds to the story - I know almost nothing about climbing, but this wasn't a problem. A fantastic read.' RJH 14/6/12
'Unputdownable!' Mike42Trees 16/6/12
