Co-authors Ed and Janet Howle seek travel and adventure. They signed on as competitors in the 2008 Great Race, which was cancelled at the last minute when China withdrew travel permits. Finally, on April 14, 2011, they passed the checkered flag in New York City, driving west across the United States, Russia and Europe in the 2011 World Race. Their entry, a 1967 Volkswagen Beetle, is outwardly identical to the one in this book. They are experienced ocean sailors and car rallyists. The setting of this novel is based on their rallies across the United States, travel in Russia, and years of living in Paris. They deny that they have ever been FBI or CIA agents.
