Before traveling to the Colorado Territory, a past vow forces David Cavanaugh to wed an heiress and leave her a virgin bride. Her father dies and Lynette joins David. Free to consummate his marriage, David discovers his sex terrifies his bride. Since they are strangers, David thinks one day is enough for her to feel comfortable with him. He rashly promises not to rush her into giving him his husbandly due. Lynette agrees. David realizes his mistake. He has waited a year to taste his wife’s charms, but he discovers it may never happen in this lifetime. He seeks an honorable solution. Comparing the luxurious life Lynette left behind to what awaited her in the mountains, David informs Lynette she has a year before she submits to his caresses, but the promise becomes void if he hears one complaint. Lynette, unaware of the hardship that awaits her, agrees since anything will be better than childbirth and the degrading torture that wives must submit to. Danger, heartbreak, as well as humor are all part of this romantic tale before David succeeds in taming his skittish bride and winning her heart.
