Sometimes people call them troublemakers or lazy or undisciplined ... because they get uneasy when they have to sit still, they daydream in class, they blurt out comments at the wrong place at the wrong time and they can't seem to follow instructions no matter how clearly you explain things to them. Kids who behave these ways may simply be unruly...or they may have ADHD.
About 2 million children in the United States have ADHD. It is estimated that in a classroom of 30 children, it is highly likely that 1 child has ADHD. This mental condition begins in childhood and may highly likely continue on to adulthood if left untreated.
Early signs of ADHD become noticeable when the child enters school. If not detected right away, ADHD can cause problems at home and school and affect the child's ability to learn and get along with others. Some of the signs and symptoms of ADHD can be:
* Easily distracted
* Transfers from one task to another over a very short period of time
* Restless and fidgety, cannot seem to sit still and has to move about all the time
* Overly sensitive and habitually fights with other kids
To help the child with ADHD, it is important for the parent to be able to spot these signs and symptoms early and get treatment immediately. With the proper care and supervision, a child with ADHD can reach his fullest potential.
