So unglaublich es klingt: Die Natur ist immer noch unschlagbar und beschert uns die erstaunlichsten Erfindungen und Phänomene, die bisweilen die menschliche Vorstellungskraft sprengen. Bakterien, die Plastik produzieren oder Strom erzeugen, gehören ebenso dazu wie natürliche Raketenantriebe oder Algen, die als Produzenten von Wasserstoff den Energiehunger künftiger Generationen stillen könnten.
Wie kommt es, dass bisweilen Frösche und Fische vom Himmel fallen, wie gelangt der Staub der Sahara bis in die Karibik und was hat es mit den rätselhaften Methanoasen der Tiefsee auf sich? Aber auch moderne Techniken hat die Natur erfunden. So verleiht ein natürliches Solarkraftwerk einem antarktischen See eine angenehme Badewassertemperatur, und - man höre und staune - den ersten funktionierenden Kernreaktor gab es in Afrika bereits vor zwei Milliarden Jahren. Und um noch eins draufzusetzen: Auch den ersten Laser hat die Natur selbst geschaffen.
Forscher rund um den Globus suchen verstärkt nach Möglichkeiten, um die Erfindungen der Natur zur Herstellung neuer Produkte und Konzepte zu nutzen. Ein Beispiel liefern extremophile Bakterien, die sich bei einer backofentauglichen Temperatur von 140 Grad Celsius äußerst wohl fühlen. Die aus ihnen gewonnenen Enzyme dürften die Chemie nachhaltig befruchten. Auch Chemosensoren, die wie Hundenasen funktionieren und kugelsichere Westen auf der Basis von Spinnenfäden sind Visionen, die aus der Schatzkiste der Evolution profitieren dürften.
