Shakespeare is the world’s most famous playwright. In a short career, spanning only twenty-three years, he wrote at least thirty-seven plays, one hundred and fifty-four sonnets and four poems. His plays have been translated into every written language in the world, including Klingon!
His legacy is immense. He coined at least 1,700 words. In the English-speaking world, his work is the most quoted after the Bible. We use many of the lines from his plays every day without even knowing their source. ‘One fell swoop’, ‘mind’s eye’ and ‘short shrift’ for example, all come from Shakespeare plays.
