Synopsis

Als Erika und Klaus Mann zusammen mit anderen Jugendlichen eine "Bande" bildeten und "schweren Unfug" verübten, sahen ihre Eltern Thomas und Katia Mann das gesellschaftliche Ansehen der Familie gefährdet. Es schien ihnen, so Klaus Mann, "eine drastische Lektion" geboten. Die beiden Mann-Kinder wurden in reformpädagogische Landerziehungsheime gegeben; bald darauf auch Golo und Monika. Dieses Buch beleuchtet die in vielerlei Hinsicht prekäre familiäre Situation im Haus der Manns, analysiert die Überlegungen Thomas Manns zur Erziehung, zur Psychoanalyse und Reformpädagogik und schildert ausführlich die Erfahrungen von Klaus Mann und seinen Geschwistern Erika, Golo und Monika in der Odenwaldschule, der Bergschule Hochwaldhausen und im Landerziehungsheim Schloss Salem. Damit legt der Autor nicht nur eine informationsreiche biografische Studie zur Familie Mann vor, sondern liefert auch einen wichtigen Beitrag zur aktuellen Debatte um die Reformpädagogik und die Erziehung in Internatsschulen.
